SJR Hankook begins British Rally Championship challenge in style

SJR Hankook rally drivers Gwyndaf Evans and Stuart Jones made an impressive start to their British Rally Championship campaigns today with both drivers setting a string of top five times on the Pirelli International Rally.

Such was the pace of both drivers on the two day event that at the end of day one, Gwyndaf and co-driver Huw Lewis were in  second place overall with team mate Stuart Jones and his co-driver Craig Parry in fourth position.

Leading at the end of the first leg is current British Rally Champion Mark Higgins with Mitsubishi driver Ryan Champion in third, splitting the two SJR Hankook drivers.

"This is an extremely tough rally with six more high speed stages tomorrow but we are delighted to be second overall at the end of a competitive day of action in the forests of Kielder," said Gwyndaf.

"We made a few adjustments to the suspension during the day but I think I managed to blow away the cobwebs and produce a good turn of speed on these challenging but fast stages."

With seven former British champions taking part in the event, including Gwyndaf, team mate Stuart was delighted to be on a par with so many legendary drivers.

The 21 year old is competing in the full BRC for the first time this year and said that to be able to match, and in some cases beat, such a high calibre of drivers illustrated why he is being seen as a future BRC champion.

"Today has been a real test for me but hope that by setting some of the fastest times I have shown my true potential and am looking forward to another day of competition here in Kielder tomorrow."

"This has been an impressive debut for the SJR Hankook rally team," said motorsport manager Mike Patterson.

"We knew the competition would be extremely tough but both crews have performed brilliantly all day," he said.

"Extensive testing before this event to fine tune the car and tyre choice have really paid dividends and the whole team has worked extremely well to set some impressive stage times."
