- Entry in Formula Drift Series in the US in April 2007
Hankook Tire (www.hankooktire.com, CEO: Cho Choong-hwan) will take part in a racing competition with the Porsche 993 GT2 which was specially built for drifting. The custom built Porsche 993 GT2, which will enter a drifting competition equipped with a Hankook Tire product, was unveiled at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas on November 1st (local time).
The Porsche will run on Hankook Tire’s Ventus R-S2 which boasts strong grip and durability. The drifting Porsche will have its debut race at the 2007 Need for Speed: Formula Drift (Formula D) Series to be held in Long Beach, California, in April 2007. Hankook Tire is teaming up with JIC Magic for the event.
Scoring in drift races is based on skills demonstrated while sliding through corners, tire smoke and showmanship. Drifting is gaining popularity among the young in the US and Japan. Launched in 2001, the Formula D Series is emerging as one of the most popular drifting events in the US.
Mr. Choi Jin Wook, president of Hankook Tire America, says, “Drifting tires require strong grip and durability due to intense handling and friction with the road surface. Hankook Tire’s excellent quality has been proven by passing the strict standards of JIC which built the Porsche drift model.”
The 600-horsepower Porsche 993 GT2 is powered by a 3.8-liter 6 cylinder engine. It is a variation of the four-wheel-drive Porsche 993 model introduced in 1996.
Hankook Tire started participating in the US Formula D Series this year to promote the company’s technologies and raise brand awareness.
The SEMA Show first got underway in 1966. Held annually in the US, it is the world’s largest automotive trade fair, attracting about 2,000 auto parts companies and 100,000 visitors.
Hankook Tire is showcasing some 30 products at this year’s event including DynaPro AT-M, its latest offering for SUVs, as well as tires for sports sedans and trucks. This year, SEMA runs from October 31st to November 3rd.
